As the Golf Course Superintendent at Somerby Golf Club in Byron, MN, from 2002 to 2006, I was integral to the development and maintenance of this prestigious private member facility. Designed by John Fought and Tom Lehman, the club opened in the spring of 2004 and was recognized as Golf Digest’s 8th Best New Private Golf Course in 2005. The course, known for its A4 bentgrass greens and L93 bentgrass tees and fairways, complemented by bluegrass roughs, also hosted the Scholarship of America PGA Tour Nationwide event.
My key responsibilities and accomplishments at Somerby Golf Club included:
Overseeing the initial course development, construction, grow-in, and implementation, ensuring the successful establishment of the golf facility.
Developing operational standards aimed at efficient productivity, which were critical for both tournament preparations and routine course setups.
Utilizing strong analytical and assessment skills, coupled with effective listening and negotiating abilities, to facilitate the development of a solid infrastructure for the club.
Managing an annual budget of $900,000 and leading a team of approximately 32 full-time seasonal staff members, ensuring smooth operations and maintenance.
Successfully achieving program certification in the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, reflecting a commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable practices in golf course management.
